bruno manser, missing since may 25, 2000, in malaysia and officially declared missing on march 10, 2005 was a swiss ethnologist and environmental and human rights activist / from 1984 to 1990, he lived in the jungles of borneo in indonesia and malaysia, documenting the fauna and flora of the tropical rainforest as well as the language and culture of the penan, a nomadic ethnic group in borneo. in april 1990, he was forced to flee to switzerland after being expelled by the malaysian government and declared a persona non grata; a bounty was also placed on his head. from then on, bruno manser devoted himself internationally to lecturing and raising awareness about the plight of the rainforest’s indigenous peoples, the machinations of the timber trade and timber industry, and the human rights situation in malaysian sarawak. meanwhile, the bruno manser fund was established in basel, switzerland in 1992, which developed into a globally respected rainforest information center and a lobby for indigenous peoples. fearing that the penan would have little chance of survival as an independent people, manser decided to return. on may 22, 2000, despite an entry ban and a bounty on his head, he traveled from the indonesian part of borneo (kalimantan) across the green border into malaysian sarawak to join the penan. he has been missing since may 25, 2000. search expeditions have been unsuccessful. on march 10, 2005, manser was officially declared missing by the basel civil court. manser wanted to make the world aware of the truth about the destruction of the rainforest and its inhabitants, and lost his life in the process.
